Our 100 year history

Broad Branch Market has been a neighborhood staple for over a century.

The original home was built in 1919 and partially operated as a market by Mr. Sauer. For seven years, Mr. Sauer established his home as the local shop until he sold to Mr. and Mrs. Bondareff in 1926.

For over 50 years, The Bondareffs slowly expanded this unassuming market into a full-scale grocery score. A one-stop Mom & Pop shop. A neighborhood haven.

Mr. Percy Edwards, better known as ‘Curly’ was a bit of a Broad Branch Market legend.

Throughout a volatile 20th century, Broad Branch Market was able to beat competitors such as Safeway and Piggly Wiggly by offering a unique delivery service. Curly, who worked at the market for nearly 50 years, would also make deliveries to homes in the area. In doing so, he became a Mr. Rogers of sorts – an unofficial Mayor of town – a friend to all.

At one point, Curly had keys to nearly everyone’s house in the neighborhood.
